âRabbit, why didnât you tell me about this earlier?â Milo could barely suppress the irritation in this voice. âThis is due tomorrow, and the nanny has already left for the day. Remember, flyers go up hereâ¦â His voice trailed off upon pointing at the board on the kitchen wall.
We were supposed to put up school notices on the board, so Milo could remember. But he had been studying for his midterms and forgot to tell the nanny to take care of it.
Five dozen baked goods were due tomorrow for a school fundraiser.
Milo (or the nanny) was supposed to buy supplies for my science project.
And there was a notice about changes in school uniforms. They had given us new logo patches to be sewn onto our blazers. Effective tomorrow.
A few other notices about Reidâs school were also hung on the board.
Milo stared blankly at the bulletin board, overwhelmed. He didnât know which task to tackle. His books and highlighters were on the kitchen island, and I had a feeling he had barely enough time to cram for his exams.
I said nothing because I knew what was happening to him. It had been happening more and more frequently over the years.
Quickly, I scanned for Raven and located her on the patio just as she glanced inside. She saw the alarm in my eyes and charged through the screen door on cue.
âHey, guys,â she said brightly.
âHi,â I responded meekly while Miloâs eyes were glued to the board.
Heavy breaths. Chest rising and falling. Trembling hands. Milo was having a full-blown panic attack.
Raven followed Miloâs gaze and frowned. Then she was in front of the bulletin board, skimming the due dates on the notices, snatching the flyers upsetting him the most. Without missing a beat, she took out her phone and texted someone.
âI was just about to sew the new logo on Miaâs blazer.â
Milo wasnât so easily fooled. âDonât you have homework?â
âNope,â she popped the P of the word nonchalantly though I knew it was a lie.
âRave,â he said softly. âYou donât have to do this.â
âI was already planning on it.â She put a hand on his cheek; a technique Raven knew calmed Milo. She added, âBefore I forget, Reidâs on his way home. I texted him to stop by the store and pick up the supplies for Miaâs science project.â
Miloâs breathing slightly evened out.
âOh, I was about to bake some dessert, so I need the kitchen. Can you finish studying in your room, please?â
Tearing his gaze away from the board, he stared at her.
âWhile Iâm at it, why donât I also throw in an extra batch of cookies for Miaâs fundraiser tomorrow?â she added slyly.
He knew what she was doing and gave her half a smile. âI canât let you do that. Youâre a terrible cook.â
Raven chuckled. âToo bad⦠Iâm still doing it unless you want a repeat of the 2012 incident?â
No one wanted a repeat of the 2012 incident. Raven almost bit our heads off because she didnât get dessert after dinner.
âBut youâll burn the house down,â he gently chided.
